You might hear it called Cal State Long Beach, Long Beach State or, simply, The Beach. Cal State Long Beach is well known for its engineering, accounting, art, business administration and nursing programs. And then there are the athletics programs. With six conference championships and five teams in the NCAA tournament during the 2007-2008 season, Cal State Long Beach is an athletic powerhouse, particularly in men’s and women’s volleyball, softball, baseball, women’s soccer, outdoor track and field, and women’s tennis. Notably, Sports Illustrated named Cal State Long Beach to its list of the Top 40 Athletic Departments in the country for overall excellence.

The Beach is a large school, serving more than 30,600 undergraduates. Despite this sizable enrollment, the university does not have an excess of on-campus housing; the 18 residence halls house only about 2000 students. Many students end up in off-campus apartments, which are available in the neighborhoods off of Bellflower Boulevard, along Los Coyotes Diagonal and near the Traffic Circle. The Belmont Shore area is popular with students as well.
